Lighter Maintenance: Keep Your Flame Going Strong
Simple steps to refill, descale, and service any lighter so it lasts for years instead of months.
A well-maintained lighter is a lifetime companion. Whether you own a butane torch, a classic flint lighter, or a plasma arc model, a few minutes of care every few months keeps it firing reliably.
Refilling a Butane Torch Lighter
- Bleed the tank first. Use a thin pen or toothpick to press the refill valve until you can no longer hear gas escaping. This prevents air pockets that cause sputtering.
- Let it cool. If you've been using it recently, wait 3–5 minutes. Cold gas compresses better.
- Insert the butane canister upside-down into the refill valve and press firmly for 3–4 seconds. You should hear a brief hiss as the gas transfers.
- Wait 2 minutes before lighting — butane needs to settle to room temperature.
- Adjust the flame. Use the + / − wheel at the bottom to set your preferred height.
Use quality butane. Premium-grade (5× or 7× refined) butane burns cleaner and extends the life of the valve and jet tip.
Cleaning a Clogged Jet
If the flame is uneven or sputters, the jet nozzle may be dirty:
- Use a compressed air can and give the nozzle a 1-second burst.
- If that doesn't work, dip a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol (90 %+) and gently clean around the opening.
- Never use water — residue from tap water leaves mineral deposits inside the nozzle.
Flint Lighter Care
- Replace the flint when striking produces no spark: unscrew the bottom plug, remove the spring, drop in a new flint, reassemble.
- Replace the wick every 6–12 months if you use the lighter daily. Pull the old wick out with pliers and feed a new one through the flint tube.
